PROMO & ACTIVATION LIONS
The
Promo Lions have been renamed the Promo & Activation Lions. For
many people, the word promotion evokes the tactics of the past, even
though the Cannes Lions definition of sales promotion has always been
“activity designed to create immediate activation and/or offer for the
sales of a product or service”. As evidenced by the past several years’
Promo Lions winners, best-in-class Promo work can innovatively employ
tactics traditionally associated with promotion – such as sampling,
tie-ins, competitions, events, in-store advertising, PR, exhibitions
and direct marketing – as well as more recently developed promotional
vehicles, including digital media, mobile applications, branded
content, social networking, augmented reality and QR codes. Indeed, the
discipline’s defining feature remains its focus on inspiring people to
engage and participate – to do something. In short: to activate.
INDEPENDENT AGENCY OF THE YEAR
This new award honours the independent agency that has amassed the most points across all the entry sections at the Festival – Film, Press, Outdoor, Radio, Media, Cyber, Direct, Promo & Activation, Design, PR, Film Craft, Titanium and Integrated Lions. The spirit of Independent Agency of the Year is to reward an individual office of an independent agency, and in doing so, encourage the spirit of creative entrepreneurship that has helped forge so many outstanding agencies in the past.
To be eligible for the award, an independent agency will be defined as an agency that is owned by its management or independent shareholders and is not associated with any holding company or listed entity.
From this year onwards, Cannes Lions will reward entries ineligible to win a Grand Prix in their sections because they are made for charities and public services. Each of the Gold winners in these categories across ALL entry sections will be judged by the Titanium and Integrated Jury, who will choose one piece to receive the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Good, to be awarded during the Awards Ceremony on Saturday 26 June.

B. OTHER FILM CONTENT
These categories are intended to highlight how film content is no longer limited to TV and cinema screens with traditional boundaries no longer what they were. Indeed, screens are becoming a cross channel platform in their own right.
Therefore, the categories below are intended for film content which is created for transmission on screens other than TV or cinema. It is understood that there will be occasions when films intended for the internet, mobile or other screens are eventually shown on TV.
For B01.-B02. entries, there is no time limit. However, any submissions longer than 3 minutes must be submitted in their entirety as well as an excerpt/edit that is under 3 minutes.
For B03. entries, you must submit all the different versions of your film in 1 sequence. See B03. Integrated Film for specific requirements.
For B04. Interactive Film entries must be submitted as a demo presentation lasting no more than 3 minutes. It should be clearly demonstrated how the viewer was able to interact with the medium.
If your entry file is large in size (ie. over 400mb), please contact filmlions@canneslions.com for further information.
B01. Internet Film

(Note, this category excludes films that were originally created and designed for TV or cinema transmission and which have subsequently been posted on the internet. Such films should be entered in the Product & Service categories above.)
B02. Other Screens
Original film content created for any other screens. Eg. Digital outdoor solutions, mobile phones, branded content on TV and cinema showcasing its brands (programming which gives the client the majority of content ownership).
B03. Integrated Film
Entries in this category must have been implemented or displayed on at least three different screens. Eg. TV, cinema, internet, mobile, digital billboard etc. All executions must originate from one idea but will have been adapted to suit different screen applications. Therefore there should be three different edits of the advert.
Please supply all the different versions of your film, and include the type of screen in the title of each version, e.g. "Dog - TV", "Dog - Mobile", "Dog - Internet". These three edits should be strung together to form one sequence.
Entrants need to give detailed information in the English synopsis field about where and when the different versions were shown.

B. CRAFT
The jury will reward the quality of Craft as demonstrated in the technical execution of Press ads. This might take into account the quality of the imagery, photography, illustration, copywriting or editing. The idea behind the execution in relation to the client or brand should be of little or no consideration to the jury, accepting, of course, that it is often integral to the ad and cannot be ignored completely.
If the ad gives a pleasurable or memorable aesthetic experience, regardless of the subject, product, client or idea, then it may succeed in the Craft categories, even if it is not awarded in the product and services categories.
The jury will consider the level of the emotional bond with the work and whether the craft of the work adds something to the idea and pushes the execution.

Cannes Lions Definition
The definition of Direct Marketing for the purpose of Cannes Lions encompasses targeted direct communication, designed with the intention of entering into a dialogue with the respondent and to generate response or specific action whilst building and prolonging relationships. It is not limited only to work that contains a response mechanism - coupon, phone number etc., but must be able to demonstrate that it had some directly attributable effect on behaviour and must be concerned with obtaining a meaningful, measurable response.
An entry or campaign may be submitted in up to two categories - However, It is essential that the entry or campaign is appropriate to both categories and that it meets the respective criteria of each. If a single entry is entered twice, it is highly recommended that the presentation of each is tailored/adapted to highlight the elements most relevant to the chosen categories. If eligible, an entry may be entered for a third time into D01. Best Integrated Campaign Led by Direct Marketing.

D. CRAFT
The jury will reward the quality of Craft as demonstrated in the design or technical execution of websites or online content. This might take into account the quality of the graphic design, photography, illustration, copywriting or animation, the skilful use of music or sound design. The idea behind the execution in relation to the client or brand may be of little or no consideration to the jury, accepting, of course, that it is often integral to the work and cannot be ignored completely.
If the content gives a pleasurable or memorable aesthetic experience, regardless of the subject, product, client or idea, then it may succeed in the Craft categories, even if it is not awarded in the product and services categories.
The jury will consider the level of the emotional bond with the work and whether the craft of the work adds something to the idea and pushes the execution.

B. CRAFT
The jury will reward the quality of Craft as demonstrated in either the production process, or the technical execution of Radio ads. This might take into account the quality of the scriptwriting or acting performance, the skilful use of music or sound design, or the best use of Radio as a Medium.
