Brand-new for 2010 is a distinct section: the Film Craft Lions. Judged by a carefully selected jury of directors, producers and creatives, it will honour the craft of the filmmaking process - the direction, copywriting or editing, or the skilful use of music or sound design.
We have consulted the production community extensively and have no doubt that The Film Craft Lions will quickly become a pillar of the Lions week. The Film Craft Lions will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday 26 June.
The Film Craft Lions categories you can enter are:
A01. Production Design
A02. Direction
A03. Cinematography
A04. Editing
A05. Copywriting
A06. Best use of Music
A07. Sound Design
A08. Special Effects & Computer Graphics
A09. Animation

From this year onwards, Cannes Lions will reward entries ineligible to win a Grand Prix in their sections because they are made for charities and public services. Each of the Gold winners in these categories across ALL entry sections will be judged by the Titanium and Integrated Jury, who will choose one piece to receive the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Good, to be awarded during the Awards Ceremony on Saturday 26 June.
INDEPENDENT AGENCY OF THE YEAR
This brand-new award honours the independent agency that has amassed the most points across all the entry sections at the Festival. An independent agency is defined as one that is not majority owned by one of the major global holding companies. Those networks are: Aegis, Dentsu, Havas, Interpublic, Omnicom, Publicis Groupe and WPP.
If the same entry is entered in more than one category in one entry section and is shortlisted and/or wins more than one award, only the points for the highest award are counted. This applies to both single and campaign entries. For instance, if a campaign wins a Lion and one part of that campaign also wins an award, only the highest award counts. This rule is applied only within each entry section; that is, if a campaign wins a Silver Lion and a Gold Lion in Direct Lions, only the Gold points are counted. However, if the same campaign wins a Silver in Media Lions and a Gold in Direct Lions, both the Silver and Gold points are counted.
The Promo Lions have been renamed the Promo & Activation Lions. For many people, the word promotion evokes the tactics of the past, even though the Cannes Lions definition of sales promotion has always been “activity designed to create immediate activation and/or offer for the sales of a product or service”. As evidenced by the past several years’ Promo Lions winners, best-in-class Promo work can innovatively employ tactics traditionally associated with promotion – such as sampling, tie-ins, competitions, events, in-store advertising, PR, exhibitions and direct marketing – as well as more recently developed promotional vehicles, including digital media, mobile applications, branded content, social networking, augmented reality and QR codes. Indeed, the discipline’s defining feature remains its focus on inspiring people to engage and participate – to do something. In short: to activate.
CANNES CREATIVE LEADERS PROGRAMME
This brand-new venture, launched by Cannes Lions and the Berlin School of Creative Leadership, is a two-week training initiative taking place in Berlin and Cannes in June 2010. It is designed for those either in a creative leadership position or about to step up to lead a team.

Any new event can be confusing at first, so if it is your first time at Cannes Lions, don't waste time working out the best way to maximise your experience. Come to How To Cannes, every morning at 9.30am for 30 minutes, where an old Cannes hand will give you the benefit of years of experience on making the most of the Festival. A Festival Official will also be on hand to answer any questions.
To sit alongside the Young Lions competitions in Cyber, Media, Film and Press, this year sees the launch of the Young Marketers Competition. Teams will be chosen from country winners in the same way as the other competitions, and will have 24 hours to create the perfect brief and present it to a panel of world-leading creatives who will judge their efforts.
CHANGES TO ENTRY CATEGORIES
A number of new initiatives across the entry categories will be introduced, including two Grands Prix in Outdoor Lions, Film Craft Lions, craft categories in Radio, Cyber and Press Lions, and 3D Container Design in Design Lions.

BRING A GUEST
From this year, you can add a guest to your Full Week, 3 Day and 4 Day delegate packages, allowing them to enjoy the award ceremonies and galas with you.
Networking at Cannes Lions is easy, but it is often with people you already know. The Cannes Connect networking tool is an online aid to meet like-minded people attending the Festival before you even arrive in Cannes. Searching for digital creatives from Asia or clients from South America? Would you like to meet production companies from Europe or professionals in the mobile space from the United States? Cannes Connect will help you get in touch. No private data is made available, and delegates can opt out if they wish.
Cannes Connect is launching in April.
