Building brands in popular culture

The entertainment model is evolving. How entertainment is funded, distributed and consumed is changing rapidly. The future of entertainment is bright, but uncertain. Who will win and who will lose? Forward-thinking people from across the entertainment, commercial and creative communities are inventing new ways to leverage the power of popular culture to build brands. They represent talent and entertainment franchises as well as labels, studios, platforms and publishers - from Disney to Diageo, Marvel to McDonald’s, from the NBA to NBC to BMW.  

That’s why Cannes Lions launched Lions Entertainment in 2016. Across two days during the main Festival week, a new and different crowd gather in the Palais to discuss the creation of culture that has commercial impact. Forward-thinking clients come to seek out partners with extraordinarily deep insight into how people live and shop, so they can use them to leverage the power of popular culture build their brand. Film producers, record label execs, TV commissioners, sports promoters and gaming entrepreneurs rub shoulders with forward-thinking brands and a new breed of creatives.

The Awards

Two dedicated Lions honour captivating content that turns consumers into fans, as well as work that creatively uses and distributes music.
  • Entertainment Entertainment Lions The Entertainment Lions showcase work that elevate branded content into the cultural mainstream, communicating a brand message or connecting with consumers in a new way.
  • Entertainment for Music Entertainment Lions for Music The Entertainment Lions for Music honour original production, promotion or distribution of music for brands, where a recording artist or platform is used to communicate with consumers.

The Juries

The Entertainment Lions jury includes leaders and creators from the top of the industry, from musicians to directors and representatives from the world’s biggest brands and agencies.

The Entertainment Lions for Music jury brings together some of the industry’s most highly-regarded specialists and creators – all of whom understand the power of music in creating breakthrough content.

The 2016 winners

More than 90 campaigns leading the way in elevating content into the cultural mainstream were recognised and celebrated at the Festival for their creative vision and achievement. You can see every winner with complete credits in the Cannes Lions Archive.
