In the Glass Lion jury

Nick Bailey recalls the first time he served on a Cannes Lions jury

Back in 2015, Nick Bailey was a member of the Glass Lion jury. This was a brand new Lion and it was his first time as a judge. The pressure was on. How did he cope?

Nick Bailey Judging
"As a first-time juror I felt acutely conscious of my new responsibility – the work we were to review representing thousands of hours of effort, pain and pride and millions invested. It quickly became clear that all of us in the room, veterans and new recruits alike, felt this burden just as keenly."
Nick Bailey, Chairman, Chief Creative Officer, Dingo Bill

“Anyone in this strange, perplexing, compelling industry of ours who says they have an entirely comfortable relationship with Cannes is surely dissembling. We all of us are metaphorically both in the arena and in the crowd, competitors and friends, workers and players.

"There’s the angst over how much fun it is reasonable to be having with the rest of the agency back home, noses to the Macs; there’s the hope, joy and inevitable despair mixed up with the awards themselves; there’s the tension between seeing enough people and seeing enough work – not to mention of course the increasing intensity of the hangovers as the years wear on and the body wears out.

"So I was pleased to have had a full decade of attendance behind me in which to arrive at my own accommodation with my fickle mistress of the Cote d’Azur, before tackling the business of the jury room – where the real, serious business of Cannes is done. And a serious business it is. As a first-time juror I felt acutely conscious of my new responsibility – the work we were to review representing thousands of hours of effort, pain and pride and millions invested. It quickly became clear though that all of us in the room, veterans and new recruits alike, felt this burden just as keenly."

"What was pleasantly surprising, however (and I’m slightly wary of admitting this) was just quite how much I enjoyed myself."
Nick Bailey, Chairman, Chief Creative Officer, Dingo Bill

"The rigour and discipline with which the work was approached was – as you would hope – as consistently and evenly applied as the entrants have every right to expect. I had anticipated this. What was pleasantly surprising, however (and I’m slightly wary of admitting this) was just quite how much I enjoyed myself."

The inevitable consequence of progressing through the ranks in agency world is that diverse demands on time and attention crowd out time for the work. The days and hours spent in the jury room, immersed in creative work, debating, questioning and enjoying it felt like an extraordinary luxury, and one I began to miss almost as soon as it was over."

The Glass Lion Grand Pix from 2015

In 2015, Nick and the rest of the Glass Lion jury awarded the first ever Grand Prix to  BBDO India for 'Touch The Pick;le'
Nick Bailey was a member of the Glass Lions jury in 2015. At the time he was CEO and Chief Creative Officer for Isobar EMEA. He has since joined the production company Dingo Bill as Chairman and Chief Creative Officer.
