As we prepare for eurobest 2017, we take a look at the five campaigns from the continent that won Grands Prix at Cannes Lions earlier this year.

‘Beyond Money’ for Santander Bank by MRM//McCann Spain


MRM//McCann Spain helped Santander win the Grand Prix in the Entertainment Lions by creating a short film set in a dystopian future where you can buy and sell experiences stored in your memory. The idea was a response to a brief to connect with the key generation for the brand - Spanish millennials - and to sell them a new product. The  17-minute sci-fi thriller was directed by a famous Spanish director, Kike Maillo, and starred Adriana Ugarte (the star of the latest Almodóvar film). The film was promoted and distributed in the media like any feature film. As a result the film reached 7.3 million people in its first week of release and outperformed blockbusters like “Fast & Furious”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Bridget Jones’s Baby” on many on-demand platforms.

‘We're The Superhumans’ for Channel 4 by 4creative

4creative and Blink Productions walked away with the Grand Prix in the Film Lions, as well as Gold and Silver Lions across Film Craft and Entertainment for their campaign designed to drum enthusiasm for Rio Paralympic Games. The film they created featured over 140 individuals - both sports people and everyday people - overcoming their disabilities and reflecting the ‘Yes I Can’ message of the music track that accompanied the campaign.

‘Aland Index / Baltic Sea Project’ for The Bank of Åland by RBK Communication

RBK Communication helped The Bank of Åland win one of the Cyber Lions Grands Prix in 2017 by building an innovative digital platform that let the bank’s customers measure the CO2 impact of every credit card transaction they make. This data was then presented with each customers’ monthly bill alongside suggestions of local, global or lifestyle calls to action to compensate their impact. The idea resulted in a 308% increase in brand awareness for the company.

‘Real-Time Virtual Reality Experience’ for Björk’s Notget by W&N Studio

‘The Humanium Metal Initiative’ for Im Swedish Development Partner by Great Works

The second Swedish campaign to win a Grand Prix at Cannes Lions 2017 was a response to the fact there are currently hundreds of millions illegal firearms in the world. To raise awareness about the issue, the campaign involved the creation of Humanium: a new metal made of destructed illegal firearms and available for commercial production. It was so well received that it was praised by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Hans Blix.
