Founder, Owner and Creative Director
Stella McCartney
Biography
Stella McCartney was born in London into a family of renowned creatives, raised between the city and English countryside. She was kept grounded and influenced by her late mother, Linda McCartney – a photographer, vegetarian and animal rights activist – whose values continue to shape her work.
After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 1995, and her extensive Saville-Row expertise, Stella immediately became known for her womenswear’s sharp tailoring, bold aesthetics and masculine energy. In 1997, she was appointed the Creative Director of Chloé in Paris, where she led the brand to both critical and commercial success.
In 2001, Stella launched her eponymous luxury fashion house, debuting in Paris. A lifelong vegetarian, Stella has never used leather, fur, feathers or skin in her designs – an approach that challenged industry norms. Since then, the brand has continued to grow its sustainability thought leadership through material and supply chain innovation, partnerships and beyond.
