Biography
Tarja Turtia is a Senior Programme Specialist at UNESCO’s Communication and Information Sector, within the Section for Access to Information and Digital Inclusion. She currently is the technical coordinator of the Global Initiative on Information Integrity for Climate Change, contributing to advancing global efforts to uphold accurate, reliable information in the climate arena. Her portfolio also includes work on multilingualism in cyberspace and the promotion of indigenous languages. Previously, she worked extensively on freedom of expression and the safety of journalists, strengthening UNESCO’s normative frameworks in these essential areas, where she also coordinated partnerships and resource mobilization efforts. In addition to her expertise, she has work on strategic planning, monitoring, reporting, and organizational transformation processes within UNESCO and the World Health Organization, ensuring efficiency and accountability. Tarja holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Tampere, Finland.
