DDB and Budweiser win big with 'Wassup'
Remembering a famous Cannes Lions moment from the archives
It was one of the most talked about TV spots of the year. We travel back in time to 2000, the year of the Sydney Olympics, the AOL-Time Warner merger and the last Peanuts cartoon. Oh, and “Wassup!”
This photo is from the 2000 Cannes Lions on the Film Lions night. It features DDB Chief Creative Officer Bob Scarpelli, Charles Stone III, one of the stars of the ad, and Marcello Serpa, who was President of the Film jury that year.
One for trivia fans, ‘Whassup?’ also picked up the snappily named ‘Journalist’s Award’, after coming top in a poll of journalists attending the Festival. Starting in 1993, the Journalist’s Award was retired in 2005.
Bob Scarpelli became Chairman and Chief Creative Officer at DDB Worldwide, before leaving in 2013 to become an adjunct professor teaching integrated marketing communications at Northwestern the following year.
Charles Stone III continued to act occasionally, and forged a new career directing music videos. He also directed a spoof version of ‘Whassup?’ in 2008 to support Barack Obama’s election campaign.
