Take a tour through this year's crop of Canadian Young Lions winners

This year Canada ran five Young Lions competitions - the winners of each will come to Cannes Lions to compete at international level in Print, Cyber, Media, Film and Young Marketers. 

Organised by the The Globe and Mail, the official Cannes Lions representative in Canada, the 2017 Young Lions and Young Marketers qualifying competitions comprised of a record high of 383 teams, each one vying for the chance to compete at the official Young Lions and Young Marketers competitions in Cannes.

Every year a non-profit organisation provides the competition brief, which this time came from Samara Canada, an organisation dedicated to reconnecting citizens to politics. Established as a charity in 2009, it as become Canada’s most trusted, non-partisan champion of increased civic engagement and a more positive public life.

Competitors were tasked with helping Samara make politics relevant again and encourage the youth audience to get more involved in the political process and appreciate the value of democracy.

Young Lions Print Competition

"Print had really powerful ideas bubble up, with spreads that look like they took way more time than a day to develop. All very campaign-able. Because the winners stood out from such stiff competition, we have high hopes for the Canadian teams competing in Cannes this year."

"Competing in the Young Lions Competition was an emotional roller coaster. At first you love the idea, then you hate it, then you start hating each other. Then you get hungry. The love-hate-hungry cycle continues until you realize it's 8am and you have to submit something. We feel blessed to have won the chance to represent our country at Cannes. We're equally as excited to drink (responsibly) all the rosé France has to offer. "

Young Lions Film Competition 

“By choosing such a hot button brief - getting millennials involved in the democratic process - we saw more individuality in the ideas than usual, likely reflecting the Young Lions personal stake in the issue. We also had all-star creative juries this year, packed with lots of former Cannes judges, so the bar was high. If any one of the finalist films aired tomorrow, they'd get a lot of buzz, and no one would suspect they were made over a weekend."

This year was no different, with the task of getting young Canadians reconnected with politics, a sensitive and tough topic to address considering today's political atmosphere. But we were able to show that Canadians already had a voice in politics, with their everyday issues being political issues. We want to thank the Globe and Mail for the opportunity, and we promise not to embarrass the Canadian ad industry in Cannes."

We knew going in—if only based on our own interest— that our generation isn’t indifferent to the future of Canadian democracy, and the research backed it up. In the past we’d discussed our shared guilt over feeling more engaged in American politics than our own, and were excited to look for ways to remedy the lack of connection between young Canadians and their own political system.
 
For us, the Young Lions competition was an exciting opportunity to flex our creative muscles and use our skills to bridge the gap between Canadian politics and the target— which was essentially ourselves. Winning gold in our category was a moment of pure elation. We’re floored to have the opportunity to not only compete on the international stage, but to experience the excitement of a global industry event like Cannes.
