Representation in Cannes Lions Film and Film Craft Work

Thursday 25 June, 16:15–16:30

Duration: 15 mins
Location: Basement Stage, The Palais

Description:

Seventy-three per cent of global consumers say they want brands to authentically reflect today’s culture, and 75% of global consumers say that diversity within brands influences their purchasing decisions. But does on-screen representation in global advertising reflect this reality? Launched in 2016, this study celebrating its 10th anniversary investigates the onscreen representation in Cannes Lions Film and Film Craft shortlisted and winning work from 2006 to 2025 and provides a deep dive into how various groups are portrayed, highlighting significant differences.

Questions this session will answer:

  • Does on-screen representation in global advertising reflect the reality of society?
  • Where has the most progress been made?
  • What are the opportunities to drive more innovation and intention to reduce portrayals that reinforce identity-based stereotypes.
