Entertainment Lions for Sport

The Entertainment Lions for Sport celebrate creativity that taps into fan culture and leverages the power of sports and esports in connecting people to brands.

Introduction

The history of the Entertainment Lions for Sport

The Entertainment Lions for Sport were introduced in 2019 to celebrate the unique and powerful intersection of sports, entertainment, and branding. This specialist Lion was created to recognise work that leverages the universal appeal and cultural significance of sports to create compelling and impactful campaigns. From collaborations with athletes and teams to activations at major sporting events and branded sports content, the Entertainment Lions for Sport honour creativity that captures the passion, energy, and community spirit inherent in sports.

Since its inception, this Lion has celebrated groundbreaking work that harnesses the emotional power of sports to create meaningful connections between brands and audiences worldwide.

Guidelines to Entering

What kind of work can be entered?

Eligible work may include campaigns featuring partnerships with athletes, teams, or leagues; branded sports content such as documentaries, commercials, or digital series; and activations at live sporting events or tournaments. This Lion also embraces innovative use of technology in sports marketing, such as augmented reality, virtual fan experiences, or interactive campaigns that engage audiences.

The work may also highlight grassroots initiatives that use sports to drive social impact or community-building, as well as collaborations that create memorable moments through sponsorships or immersive fan experiences. Ultimately, the work should showcase how sports can serve as a dynamic platform for storytelling, emotional engagement, and delivering tangible results for brands.

Brands refers to talent, artists, creators, influencers, streamers, athletes, teams, organisations, sponsors, platforms, media owners, rights holders or any entity that produces and distributes products and content related to the sport industry.

What is the judging criteria?

A number of criteria will be considered during judging, weighted as follows: 30% creative idea; 20% strategy & insight; 30% craft & execution; 20% results.

Eligibility

Work will need to have been executed during the eligibility period of 01 February 2026 - 08 April 2027.

Is there a limit to how many times I can enter?

There is no overall limit to how many times the same piece of work can be entered into Entertainment Lions for Sport as long as the categories chosen are relevant.

Esports may be entered across all categories within the Entertainment Lions for Sport.

What do I need to provide with my entry?

To enter, you’ll need to complete an online entry form, which can be found on the Cannes Lions entry site. In the ‘Written Explanation’ section, you’ll be asked to provide the Jury with everything they need to know about your work.

Subtitles are highly recommended on all case films, films, demo films and original content.

Detailed information outlining the entry process can be found on our Guide to the Cannes Lions Awards.

What if I don’t have all the details right away?

Don’t worry – you can fill in the form in any order and save your progress at any time while it’s still in the pending stage. However, please only check out when your entry is 100% complete as no changes can be made to your entry once you’ve clicked “Submit” and “Checkout”.

Integrity Measures

All entries must provide Proof of Impact for every claim made in the written submission and supporting material. This material is compulsory for each entry, and types of sources accepted include third-party analytics, platform analytics, public reports, images of account dashboards, or client letter on official company letterhead.

Each entry must also receive Authorisation to Submit by the most senior executive at both the entrant company (CEO or equivalent) and the brand that commissioned the work (CMO or equivalent). This happens after your entry has been checked out and processed by the Awards team and is a compulsory step in the process.

More information on these new measures can be found on the Integrity Standards.

Entry Tips

What’s the Jury looking for?

Work that demonstrates how sports can be a powerful platform for storytelling, cultural relevance, and meaningful brand connections. Work that goes beyond traditional sponsorships or endorsements to create innovative, emotionally engaging, and memorable experiences for audiences.

  • A strong insight, impressive execution and real results that link back to the objective
  • Considered craft (esports and gaming, live experiences, film series and audio, etc.)

Advice from the Jury

We asked last year’s Jury for tips for future entrants. Some common themes that emerged across all the Awards were:

Be clear on the problem and the solution

  • Clearly state the problem your work solves. Tell the story clearly and without overclaiming on results or impact. Don’t make the Jury work to connect dots. Keep the main idea simple enough to explain in one sentence.

Focus on one story

  • Lean into one clear story. It's tempting to pack in everything you're proud of, but the entries that resonate most are the ones that pick a single thread and follow it all the way through. Avoid including too many claims with regard to impact, instead focus on the most relevant and impactful results.

Tailor the entry to the category

  • Treat each entry as its own creative brief. Every submission should clearly make the case for why the work belongs in that specific Lion and subcategory. Don’t copy/paste, fill your forms out with care and attention – the Jury will come back to them time and time again.

Context is key

  • Remember the Jury are from all over the world, so provide context to ensure they understand the significance of your results and the relevance of any cultural insight.

Advice from Entertainment Lions for Sport Jury:

“The strongest entries don't just showcase great execution - they clearly demonstrate the insight, strategy and creative idea that made a meaningful impact. In sport, we're speaking to fans, not customers. The emotional connection people have with teams, athletes and sporting moments is unlike any other category, and the work that stood out respected and celebrated that passion. The best entries moved beyond sponsorship to create authentic fan engagement, cultural relevance and measurable impact. Tell a clear, compelling story, focus on what makes the work truly distinctive, and let the creativity - not just the case film - do the talking.”

Binda Dey | Global Chief Marketing Officer, Knight Riders Sports

"Explain your work like you're speaking to a fan. Judge it by whether you think they'd love it."

Guy Futcher | Regional Executive Creative Director, Octagon APAC

“1) Make sport the idea, not the backdrop. The work that rose to the top never simply borrowed sport's passion — sport was inseparable from the creative idea itself. 2) Think about the role fans play too: the strongest entries didn't treat fans as the audience to reach, but as the mechanism of the idea — built into how the work actually functioned. 3) Use data and technology in service of emotion, not as the idea itself; the best cases made technology invisible infrastructure for deeply human insights. 4) Show impact beyond impressions — how the work strengthened a community, changed behaviour, or served athletes as meaningfully as fans.”

Melody Li | SVP & Global Business Development, Dentsu Sports International

“On the results section of the criteria specifically, I'm less interested in vanity metrics and more interested in behavioural ones. Did this work create new fans? Did it change purchasing behaviour in a measurable way? Did it expand who this sport belongs to? Those are the results worth talking about. I'm also looking for honesty in the case study – brands that acknowledge a real business problem and show real evidence of solving it, not brands that retrofitted a cultural moment to make a brand health slide look good.”

Shannon Washington | President, VIRTUE Worldwide

To start your entry to the Entertainment Lions for Sport, go to our Awards page.

The Jury will refer to the written explanation you provide throughout the judging process. Our advice is to provide as much relevant detail as possible.

When answering the following questions keep the main element you’re trying to celebrate in mind (e.g. the storytelling, the strategy, the craft, the use of data).

The bullet points under each question are prompts designed to guide your thinking, based on the factors the jury will be considering when reviewing your work. You might not need to use them all, and that’s totally fine. They’re there to help you consider what’s most important in your work.
